Article No. 88-1-13
MERKUR: 1985-88 XR4Ti
ISSUE: Excessive oil consumption on 1985-88 XR4Ti's may be due to an engine crankcase that is overfilled with engine oil. The overfilling may be caused by a dipstick and tube assembly that is improperly calibrated.
ACTION: To correct this, calibrate the dipstick and tube assembly using the following service procedure.
1. Drain the engine oil and remove the oil filter.
2. Install a new oil filter and five (5) quarts of oil.
3. Start the engine and idle for about one (1) minute.
4. Stop the engine and allow 5-10 minutes for the oil to drain back to the oil pan.
FIGURE 6:
5. Check the engine oil level with the dipstick and measure the distance from the "Full" (top of the safe area) mark to the actual oil level indicated on the dipstick, Figure 6.
6. Transfer the measurement from Step 5 to the top of the dipstick tube.
7. Using a mini-tubing cutter, Snap-On TC 123A or equivalent, cut the top of the dipstick tube at the mark made in Step 6.
