Engine Cooling Fan - Discharges Battery
Article No. 86-21 -5ENGINE COOLING FAN RUNS CONTINUOUSLY - DISCHARGES BATTERY
MERKUR 1985-86 XR4Ti
The engine cooling fan on some 1985 and 1986 Merkur vehicles built prior to December, 1985, may run continuously until battery voltage is depleted. Service experience has shown the most likely cause for this concern to be a malfunctioning A/C triple pressure switch on the receiver dryer. A new design switch (effective in production December 1, 1985) is now available to service this concern. The replacement procedure is outlined in Section 36-01 of the 1985 Merkur XR4Ti Shop Manual.
A second, but not as likely, cause could be a sticking engine cooling fan temperature switch on the lower intake manifold. Diagnosis and replacement procedures for this switch is covered in Section 27 of the Shop Manual.
