Engine: Service and Repair

1. Relieve fuel system pressure by disconnecting electrical connector at inertia switch, then crank engine for 15 seconds.
2. Remove timing window cover at transaxle and rotate engine until flywheel timing marker is aligned with timing pointer.
3. Mark crankshaft pulley at 12 o'clock (TDC) position. Rotate crankshaft pulley to 6 o'clock (BDC) position.
4. Disconnect battery ground cable.
5. Mark position of hood hinges for installation reference, then remove hood.
6. Remove air cleaner assembly and drain engine coolant.
7. Disconnect upper radiator hose at engine.
8. Disconnect and mark wiring assembly and vacuum lines for installation reference.
9. Disconnect crankcase ventilation hose at valve cover and intake manifold.
10. Disconnect fuel lines and heater hoses at throttle body.
11. Disconnect ground wire at engine.
12. Disconnect accelerator cable and throttle valve control cable at throttle body.
13. On models with A/C, discharge A/C system and pressure and suction lines from compressor.
14. On all models, remove drive belt and water pump pulley.
15. Remove air cleaner to canister hose, then raise and support vehicle.
16. Drain engine oil and remove oil filter.
17. Disconnect starter cable and remove starter motor.
18. Remove converter nuts, then position mark on crankshaft pulley as close to 6 o'clock position (BDC) as possible with converter stud visible. The flywheel timing must be in a 6 o'clock position for proper engine removal and installation.
19. Remove engine insulator nuts, then disconnect exhaust pipe from manifold.
20. Disconnect canister and halfshaft brackets from the engine.
21. Remove lower engine to transaxle attaching bolts, then disconnect lower radiator hose at tube.
22. Lower vehicle and position a floor jack under transaxle.
23. Disconnect power steering lines at pump.
24. Attach suitable engine lifting device to engine, then remove upper engine to transaxle attaching bolts.
25. Remove engine from vehicle.
26. Reverse procedure to install.
