Engine Cooling Fan - Contacts Fan Shroud

FAN - ELECTRO-DRIVE ENGINE COOLING - CONTACTS FAN SHROUD - LOOSE MOUNTING SCREWS

FORD 1986 TAURUS

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1986 SABLE

If the electro-drive engine cooling fan contacts the fan shroud, the cause could be improperly torqued or loose mounting screws. To correct this, use the following inspection and service procedure:

NOTE: Vehicles returned for the M47/M48 Owner Notification Program should be checked for this condition.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

2. Check to see if the fan motor is loose by grasping the backside and shaking it. Proceed to Step 3 only if the fan motor is loose.

3. Remove the fan motor/shroud assembly. Refer to the 1986 Taurus/Sable Shop Manual, Section 27-10-2.

4. Remove the fan U-spring retainer and dress the end of the motor shaft with emery cloth to remove any burrs.

NOTE: Unless the motor shaft is cleaned, the fan hub will be damaged or broken when removed.

5. Remove the fan from the motor shaft.

6. Remove the fan motor from the shroud.

7. Inspect the fan motor and shroud for damage. Any damaged components should be replaced.

8. Install the fan motor to the shroud and torque the attaching screws to 8-12 N-m (70-106 in.lbs.),refer to Figure 4.

9. Install the fan on the motor shaft.

10. Install the U-spring retainer.

11. Install the fan motor/shroud assembly and torque to specification.
12. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
