HEATER - INSUFFICIENT AIR FLOW TO THE FRONT FLOOR AREA

FORD 1986 TAURUS

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1986 SABLE

Customer concerns of insufficient air flow to the front floor area can be improved by reworking the heater system using the following procedure.

1. Remove the floor duct from the vehicle as follows:

a. Remove the instrument panel brace located above the accelerator pedal and next to the floor duct.

b. Remove the two screws attaching the floor duct to the evaporator assembly.

c. Pull the dash panel edge of the carpet rearward (toward seat), then pull the floor duct down and toward the cowl to disengage it from the rear seat duct and remove the floor duct from the passenger side.

Figure 18:

2. Using a solder gun with a flat cutting tip, enlarge the two existing floor duct openings and add a third to the duct as shown in Figure 18.

NOTE: Use only ready made flat type solder gun tips.

3. Place a piece of black duct tape on the outside of the floor duct across the bottom of the left side lower opening (Figure 18). Then place a second piece of tape inside the duct extending it through the opening and down the outside of the duct (Figure 18) to reinforce the single thickness of the first piece of tape over the opening.

4. Remove the foam seal from the rear floor duct insert of the floor duct and replace it with 3/8 inch thick foam seal procured locally (Figure 18).

5. Reinstall the floor duct in the vehicle from the passenger side, reversing the procedure given in Step 1.
