Accessory Drive Belts - Adjustment Procedure

Article No. 86-7-9

NOISE - ACCESSORY DRIVE BELTS (3.0L) - ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE - SHOP MANUAL REVISION

FORD 1986 TAURUS

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1986 SABLE

The accessory drive belt system on the 3.0L engine uses the water pump pulley and power steering/alternator bracket for both drive belts. When adjusting the tension of an individual drive belt, the tension on the other drive belt may change due to the bracket geometry causing an interaction between the two belts.

SPECIAL SERVICE TOOLS
The following procedure should be added to Section 27-02-1 of the 1986 Taurus/Sable Shop Manual and also followed when adjusting belt tension on 3.0L engines to avoid creating belt noise complaints and repeat repairs:

^ Adjust the power steering/air conditioning belt to proper tension before adjusting the alternator belt. Use belt tension gauge, Rotunda No. 021-00028 or equivalent.

^ Check the tension on both belts after the bolts are adjusted and the hardware attaching bolts are properly torqued.
