FORD 1986-87 TAURUS
LINCOLN-MERCURY 1986-87 SABLE
ISSUE: Steering wheel nibble on 1986-87 Taurus/Sable vehicles may be caused by the production steel wheels.
ACTION: To correct this, replacement 14" x 5.5" (E7DZ-1007-B) and 15" x 6.0" (E7DZ-1007-C) steel wheels are available. Prior to replacement of the steel wheels, the wheels should be balanced as described in Steps 1 and 2.
1. Remove all four (4) tire and wheel assemblies and balance. If a two-plane dynamic balancer is used, switch to the static balance mode to check that the static balance is also good.
2. If further service is required, perform on-car balance on all four (4) tire and wheel assemblies.
3. If further service is required, replace the wheel assemblies as follows:
NOTE: If wheel replacement is required, all four (4) wheels should be replaced. Care must be taken to make sure of proper tire/wheel index matching.
Prior to dismounting the tire, the wheel should be checked for radial runout low point sticker and location. The sticker is yellow green in color and is located on the bead seat flange of the wheel. If this is found on the wheel, mark the tire bead directly across from sticker with a crayon. This is the high point location of the tire runout. This high point location mark on the tire should be matched to the low point sticker location on the new certified wheel assemblies, when mounting the tires. If the wheel does not have a low point sticker, the following should be used to determine the tire/wheel index marks.
Figure 24:
Prior to dismounting the tire from the original wheel, place a crayon mark on both the wheel bead rim and tire sidewall junction at the same location. Upon dismounting the tire from the wheel, locate the wheel radial runout low point mark. This can be identified by a green, yellow, or orange spray paint dot in the wheel rim (tire side) dropwell. This is the actual low point mark and should be marked as an "X" on the wheel rim. Next, take the wheel and place it over the tire you just removed. Line-up the original crayon marks which you first put on the tire/wheel and then simply mark the tire at the "X" location of the wheel. This is the high point location of the tire and needs to be indexed (matched) to the new sticker location on the replacement wheels, Figure 24.
NOTE: The old wheels (having been marked with their on-car position - L.F. for left front, etc.) are to be sent to the Warranty Parts Return Center, Plymouth, Michigan.
