SUSPENSION - FRONT - CAMBER/CASTER ALIGNMENT - REVISED SHOP MANUAL PROCEDURE


FORD 1986 TAURUS

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1986 SABLE

A new camber/caster alignment procedure has been developed to correct vehicles that pull left or right. This new procedure allows the camber/caster to be adjusted. However, the sub-frame to body alignment must be checked with a 19 mm (3/4 inch) pipe or similar tool. If necessary correct the sub-frame alignment prior to performing camber/caster alignment procedure. Refer to the following for sub-frame alignment and camber/ caster alignment procedure. Sub-Frame Alignment

1. Loosen four sub-frame to body bolts. (Figure 10)

2. Install a 19 mm (3/4 inch) outside diameter pipe or similar tool into front driver's side sub-frame and body alignment holes. After aligning the holes, slightly tighten the driver's side front body mount bolt.

3. Perform Step 2 on passenger side front alignment holes.

4. Recheck driver's side alignment holes with tool.

5. After, sub-frame alignment is complete, tighten four attaching bolts to 88-136 N-m (65-100 ft.lbs.).

Camber/Caster Adjustment

1. Center punch four spot welds on both alignment plates. (Figure 11)

2. Loosen three strut attaching nuts on each side of vehicle.

3. Use Rotunda Spot-Eze to remove four welds on each side. (Figure 12).

CAUTION: Do not cut deeper than thickness of alignment plates.

4. Remove three nuts attaching strut mount to tower on each side.

5. Remove both alignment plates.

6. Clean burrs from towers, alignment plates, paint exposed metal on strut towers and plates. (Figure 13)

7. Install both alignment plates.

8. Install three strut mount nuts on each side loosely. (Figure 14)

9. Make alignment - camber/caster adjustments. Refer to TSB 86-2-11 for specifications.

10. Tighten three strut nuts on each side to 27-40 N-m (20-30 ft.lbs.).

11. Drill three 3.2 mm (1/8 inch) holes through alignment plates, strut towers, and paint exposed metal.

CAUTION: Do not drill deeper than 9.6 mm (3/8 inch) into shock tower. Figure 14 (see Figure 15 for hole location).

12. Install three pop rivets 3.2 mm diameter (1/8 inch) x 6.4 mm (1/4 inch) grip range on each side using Rivet Tool D79P-53700-A (Figure 16).
