ISSUE:
When replacement of the Electrically Heated Windshield is needed, the customer may want to avoid the high replacement cost of the original windshield. If the choice for the non-heated (conventional) windshield is made, disabling the heated windshield system controls is necessary.
ACTION:
Refer to the following procedure for service details to disable the Electrically Heated Windshield system for installation of a conventional windshield.
CAUTION:
CHECK GENERATOR VOLTAGE OUTPUT (13.0V TO 15.0V). IF NOT BETWEEN 13.0V TO 15.0V, IT COULD BE DUE TO THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE NOT BEING PERFORMED WHEN CONVENTIONAL WINDSHIELD WAS INSTALLED. IF THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE WAS PERFORMED, SEE THE CORRESPONDING VEHICLE'S SERVICE MANUAL FOR TROUBLESHOOTING.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Disconnect (-) negative battery terminal.
2. Refer to the corresponding vehicle's EVTM to locate the appropriate Heated Windshield Control Module (18C531) and Alternator Output Control Relay/Heated Windshield Relay (18D414).
3. Locate the Heated Windshield Control Module (18C531), unplug connector.
4. Locate terminal # 1 (Figure 1), remove terminal locking tabs, remove wire/terminal from the # 1 terminal location, and re-install terminal locking tab.
5. Wrap electrical tape securely around wire terminal to insulate from contact with an electrical ground. Fold back wire to harness and securely tape to harness to prevent movement. Plug connector back into the Heated Windshield Control Module (18C531).
6. Locate the Alternator Output Control Relay/Heated Windshield Relay (18D414) and remove the 16 gauge wire with the moulded insulator cap connected to the "MOD" terminal (Figure 2).
7. Wrap electrical tape securely around the moulded insulator cap to insulate from contact with an electrical ground. Fold back wire to harness and securely tape to harness to prevent movement.
8. Remove the wire/eyelet end from the terminals marked "BAT" and "ALT" on the (18D414) relay.
a. Clean eyelet ends to ensure a good electrical connection.
b. Install both wire/eyelets to the "ALT" stud on the (18D414) relay (Figure 2). Invert "ALT" eyelet for proper mating and seating.
c. Torque "ALT" terminal nut to 3.4 N-m (30 lb.in.).
d. Apply electrical sealant compound to connection.
9. Reconnect (-) negative battery terminal.
The heated windshield is now deactivated. When pressing the Electrical Heated Windshield "ON" button, the "ON" indicator will not illuminate. Also check for generator voltage at the battery with the vehicle at idle. Voltage should be between 13.OV to 15.0V. If not, see the corresponding vehicle's Service Manual for troubleshooting.
