Instrument Cluster - Erratic Operation Diagnosis
Article No. 86-8-5INSTRUMENT CLUSTER - ERRATIC OPERATION - ELECTRONIC SWITCH MODULE ASSEMBLIES - VEHICLES BUILT BETWEEN 12/1/85 AND 2/1/86
FORD 1986 TAURUS
LINCOLN-MERCURY 1986 SABLE
Some switch module assemblies, E6DF-10D889-AD (E6DZ-10D889-A), which may have been installed on Taurus/Sable vehicles built from 12/1/85 to 2/1/86, can exhibit erratic operation.
In these cases, the Electronic Instrument Cluster may randomly sound a tone for no apparent reason or the switch module assembly may be unable to select a particular cluster function. These concerns can cause the fuel computer to respond as if the Distance-ToEmpty(DTE) function switch was selected when actually no switch was pressed.
NOTE: A tone normally sounds when the DTE function switch is pressed.
Use the following diagnostic procedure to check for erratic switch module assemblies.
