BUMPER - FRONT AND REAR - PAINTING PROCEDURE FOR SERVICE REPLACEMENT PARTS (PLASTIC BUMPERS)

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1986 SABLE
All 1986 Taurus/Sable front and rear bumper service requirements can be satisfied with five "Service Only" (prime painted) bumpers and two production bumpers. In order to properly identify the "Service Only" bumpers, the previously used symbol for "prime" paint (000) would be used in the part number suffix. For example, production part EXXB-17750-AWA (multiple body colors) would be identified as EXXB-17750-A000A (low gloss black prime). The following "Service Only" parts can be substituted for the production parts shown below.

The production Sable rear bumpers are released in only one color and will be serviced as "Finish" painted.

The five "Service Only" bumpers will be painted at the Milan Plant with "Redspot" primer. This paint is identified as "Redspot" System 206LE, Color 13931 Low Gloss Black (JASAXXG), which meets Ford Performance Specification ESB-M2P127-A. The paint procedure to be followed in "Finish" painting these unique bumpers is as follows:
1. Lightly scuff sand the exterior prime painted surface.
CAUTION: DO NOT SAND THE UNPRIMED BACK SURFACE OR THROUGH THE BLACK PRIME PAINT.
2. Wash the scuff sanded bumper with Ford "MultiPurpose Paint Pre-Cleaner", part number VC-542- A, or equivalent.
CAUTION: AVOID ANY CONTACT OF "PRECLEANER" TO THE UNPAINTED SURFACE OF THE BUMPER.
3. Wipe and dry washed surface of the bumper with a clean "tack" cloth.
4. Apply the appropriate DuPont air dry paint materials as follows:
Color Only: Review and follow instructions on container labels.
A. Apply properly thinned, proportioned, and mixed No. 30-S Primer and No. 355-S Flexible Additive. Allow one to two hours drying time before application of color coats.
B. Apply properly proportioned and mixed No. 99A Enamel (appropriate color) and No. 793-S Hardener. Allow eight hours to overnight drying time to assure paint hardness.
Basecoat/Clearcoat Only: Review and follow instructions on container labels.
A. Apply properly thinned and agitated No. 30-S Primer.
NOTE: Flexible Additive is not used with basecoat/clearcoat finishes. Allow one-half to one hour drying time before application of lacquer.
B. Apply properly thinned, proportioned and agitated Lucite Acrylic Lacquer (appropriate color) and allow fifteen to thirty minutes drying time before clearcoat.
C. Apply properly proportioned and mixed No. 580-S Enamel Clearcoat and No. 582-S Activator. Allow eight hours to overnight drying time to assure finish coat hardness.
