Article No. 89-13-7
FORD: 1986-89 TAURUS
LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1986-89 SABLE
ISSUE: The published throttle body hardstop procedures and specifications in some cases may be incorrect or missing because of calibration changes.
ACTION: The correct procedure and specifications for setting the hardstop are given in the following article. Please use the following service procedure and specifications when adjusting the hardstops on 1986-89 Taurus/Sable vehicles.
THROTTLE BODY HARDSTOP SET PROCEDURE
NOTE: CHECK FOR SLUDGING OF THE THROTTLE BODY AND BYPASS VALVE. SERVICE ANY SLUDGING CONCERN BEFORE PERFORMING HARDSTOP SET PROCEDURES.
1. Take the following action.
^ Place the transmission in Neutral or Park.
^ Turn the A/C-Heat selector to the "OFF" position.
^ Apply the parking brake.
^ Block the wheels.
2. Bring the engine to normal operating temperature. Check for vacuum leaks down stream of the throttle plates and repair as required.
3. Unplug the SPOUT and verify that the ignition timing is 10~ BTDC +/- 2~. If the timing is not to specification, reset per ignition timing set procedure.
4. With the engine OFF, check to see that the throttle plate stop screw is resting on the throttle pad. Service as required.
5. Disconnect the air bypass valve assembly connector.
6. Remove the PCV entryline at the PCV valve.
7. Install Orifice Tool T86P-9600-A (0.200" orifice diameter) in the PCV entry line.
8. Start the engine and hold idle @ 2000 RPM for 30-45 seconds in Neutral. To set the hardstop, the vehicle should be idling in Drive.
NOTE: IF THE ELECTRIC COOLING FAN COMES ON DURING IDLE SET, WAIT UNTIL THE FAN SWITCHES OFF. DO NOT UNPLUG THE FAN MOTOR OR OVERHEATING MAY RESULT.
9. Adjust the throttle plate stop screw to the HARDSTOP SET RPM specified in the following Hardstop Setting Specifications Chart.
10. After the idle has been set, shut off the engine.
11. Restart the engine and reconfirm that the idle speed is set as specified in steps 8 and 9 after 3 to 5 minutes.
12. If the idle speed is not within specification, repeat Steps 8 and 9.
13. Shut off the engine.
14. Disconnect the negative battery terminal for 5 minutes.
15. Remove the Orifice Tool and reconnect the PCV entry line.
16. Install the SPOUT.
17. Reconnect the air bypass valve assembly.
18. Check to see that the throttle plate is not stuck in the bore and that the throttle plate stop screw is setting on the rest pad with the throttle closed. Correct any condition that will not allow the throttle to close to the stop set position.
19. Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
20. Proceed as follows:
^ Restart the engine.
^ Hold the idle speed at 2000 RPM for 30-45 seconds in Neutral.
^ After 3 to 5 minutes of running at idle, the engine speed should be at the CONTROLLED IDLE RPM in Neutral and Drive as specified in the Hardstop Setting Specification Chart.
21. Check and adjust the throttle valve (TV) linkage. Refer to the appropriate model year Taurus/Sable Shop Manual, Section 17-25 for service details.
