Blower Motor - Intermittently/Totally Inoperative

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1986-88 SABLE


ISSUE: An inoperative or intermittent heater and air conditioning blower motor may be caused by the blower motor switch or connector. Two terminals in the blower motor switch connector may overheat and possibly damage the connector.


ACTION: Install a new connector and terminals that are made of Beryllium copper to better withstand heat. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

1. Remove the blower motor switch. Refer to the Taurus/Sable Shop Manual, Volume C, Section 36-12 for service details.

2. Check the switch and connector for heat damage, Figure 2. If okay perform normal diagnostics. If damaged proceed to Step 3.
3. Disconnect the connector from the switch.

4. Remove the four (4) wires and terminals from the connector.

NOTE: IF THE CONNECTOR IS DISTORTED ENOUGH THAT THE WIRES AND TERMINALS CANNOT BE REMOVED, THE WIRES SHOULD BE CUT AS CLOSE TO THE CONNECTOR AS POSSIBLE AND FOUR (4) NEW TERMINALS INSTALLED.

5. Throw away the connector.

6. Install new terminals, (E53Z-14474-A) on the orange-black wire (circuit #261) and the black wire (circuit #57), Figure 3.

7. Install the four (4) wires and terminals into the new connector, (E1FZ-14489-K).

8. Reconnect or install a new blower motor switch, if required.

9. Reinstall the blower motor switch.
