Vehicles with a 70 amp alternator and a 58AH (amphour) battery may exhibit poor charging during hot weather and low speed vehicle operation. Long periods of operation at idle or low speed results in the electrical load exceeding the alternator output capability and causes a discharged battery. To correct this, it may be necessary to install a new 100 amp alternator or a larger battery. Use the following diagnostic repair procedure:
1. Check the electrical system for loose battery con - nections, battery draw with key off, or alternator malfunctioning. Refer to Section 31-01-1 of the Taurus/Sable Shop Manual and service as required.
2. Check to make sure the dropping resistor for the engine electric cooling fan is operating correctly. Refer to TSB Article No. 86-15-2.
3. In areas of very hot weather for long periods of time, such as regions in the South and Southwest United States, install a new design 100 amp alternator (E7PZ-10346-A).
4. In more moderate climates, replace 58AH battery (Motorcraft part number BX-58C) with 84AH battery (Motorcraft part number BX-65).
NOTE: Both the alternator and battery should not be replaced together to correct this concern. However, South and Southwest U.S. vehicles which have had the battery upgrade (TSB 86-15-2) may perform the alternator upgrade.
