LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1986-87 SABLE
ISSUE: An unusual "rattling" noise or vibration in the engine compartment may be caused by inadequate torque on the crankshaft pulley retaining bolts.
ACTION: To correct this, install four (4) new design crankshaft pulley retaining bolts that have a washer type head for better torque retention. Refer to the following service procedure for removal and installation instructions.
FIGURE 3:
1. Loosen the accessory drive belts.
2. Raise vehicle on hoist.
3. Remove the right front tire and wheel assembly.
4. Remove the existing four (4) pulley-to-damper attaching bolts, Figure 3.
NOTE: If the crankshaft pulley, damper, or accessory drive belts are damaged, replace as required.
5. Install four (4) new pulley-to-damper attaching bolts (N804743-S8). Torque the bolts to 22-31 ft.lbs. (29-41 N-m).
6. Install the right front tire and wheel assembly.
7. Lower vehicle.
8. Tighten the accessory drive belts.
