Engine Compartment Lamps - Accidental Short Circuit
Article No. 86-8-6LAMPS - ENGINE COMPARTMENT
- ACCIDENTAL SHORT CIRCUIT DURING SERVICE
FORD 1986 TAURUS
LINCOLN-MERCURY 1986 SABLE
The underhood light circuit is fed through the hood lift cylinder. If the hood lift cylinder rod is inadvertently shorted to the body or engine components with a tool, the underhood light circuit fuse will open and the current surge of the short circuit may cause permanent damage to the lift cylinder internal seal, keyless entry, power door locks and/or interior lights.
Correction
When working in the area of the left hood lift cylinder, the wire lead from the 14401 harness should be disconnected from the base of the lift cylinder and replaced when work is completed. To eliminate the subject concern permanently, a jumper wire can be installed to bypass the hood lift cylinder using the following procedure.
1. Obtain two blade-type terminals (part number D3AZ-14474-F), two tie straps (part number 95832-S), and an 18-inch length of 16 gauge insulated wire.
2. Crimp terminals to wire using standard crimping tool, T67S-17018-A.
3. Disconnect the wire leads from base and top of hood lift cylinder.
4. Install the blade terminals of the jumper wire into the connectors that were removed from the lift cylinder.
NOTE: Any portion of the blade terminals on the jumper wire that extend past the male connectors should be covered with electrical tape.
Figure 4:
5. Using the two tie straps, secure the jumper wire to the upper housing of the lift cylinder, as shown in Figure 4.
NOTE: Make sure tie straps are tight so jumper wire will not move when hood is raised or lowered.
