Exhaust System - Sulfur Smell

Article No. 86-18-9

EXHAUST - SULFUR SMELL - 3.0L

FORD 1986 TAURUS

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1986 SABLE

CALIBRATION: 3.0L Only

WARNING: This modification is authorized only for the listed engines. Performing this modification on other engine calibrations is unauthorized and could create liability under applicable federal or local laws.

An objectionable exhaust sulfur smell may be experienced during various driving conditions. The vehicle is sensitive to the sulfur content of the gasoline being used. During certain drive modes (lean air/fuel ratio) the sulfur is deposited in the catalyst. During decel or idle (rich air/fuel ratio) the sulfur smell is released by the catalyst.

To correct this, install a new designed catalytic converter, E7DZ-5F250-B (50 State) or E7DZ-5F250-C (Canada), and flex joint-gasket as outlined in the 1986 Taurus/Sable Shop Manual, Section 26-10-3.

Obtain an Authorized Modifications Decal and list the date, dealer number, and summary of alterations performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
