Headrest - May Not Stay In Full Raised Position

SEAT - HEADREST - MAY NOT STAY IN FULL RAISED POSITION
FORD 1986 TAURUS
LINCOLN-MERCURY 1986 SABLE
The front seat headrest may not stay in a full, raised position. This is may be caused by a low friction fit between the headrest shafts and the shaft sleeves or loose sleeve caps. To correct this, first check for loose sleeve caps and tighten as outlined in Step A. If the condition still exists, install the new, improved headrest guide rod sleeves (E6DZ-54610A16-A) as outlined below.
Step A. While holding the headrest in the up posi-
tion, turn the sleeve caps clockwise until
snug. The caps and sleeves are threaded
and tightening the caps will increase fric-
tion on the headrest shafts.

Removal
1. Raise the headrest full up. Loosen and raise sleeve caps. Tape caps to hold out of the way and lower headrest. (Figure 2)

2. Separate front seat back trim cover at "J" retainers. (Figure 3)

3. Refer to Figure 4 and fabricate a tool used for the headrest removal.
NOTE: Only one shaft per headrest has a retainer spring.

4. Reach up under or raise back of trim cover and position the fabricated tool on the headrest shaft. Remove the headrest and both sleeve caps. (Figure 5)

5. Remove the trim cover and pad from seat back. Refer to the 1986 Taurus/Sable Shop Manual and use Steps 5 and 6 of Seat, Front-Back Trim Cover
- Removal, Section 41-60-1.
WARNING: Safety glasses must be worn for Step 6.
6. Place a piece of board on top of the sleeve and sharply hit the board to drive each sleeve through the seat back frame. (Figure 6)
7. Remove the sleeves and any pieces of plastic from inside seat back frame.

Installation
1. Push the sleeves through both holes in seat frame. Make sure the fingers on bottom of sleeves are expanded at the bottom hole. (Figure 7)
2. Install the pad and trim cover on seat back. Refer the 1986 Taurus/Sable Shop Manual and use Steps 1, 2, 3, and 4 of Seat, Front-Back Trim Cover
- Installation, Section 41-60-1.

3. Make sure the caps are on the headrest shafts and install the headrest guide rod sleeves. (Figure 8)
4. Remove tape from caps and screw the caps onto the sleeves tightly.
5. Check the up and down movement of the headrest. If it is difficult to move, slightly loosen one or both caps as required.
