NOISE - GROAN OR CLICK - INTERMEDIATE SHAFT

FORD 1986-87 TAURUS

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1986-87 SABLE

A groaning or clicking noise coming from the steering column-to-intermediate shaft connection may be caused by a slight sliding movement of the column to the shaft. To correct this, apply a heavyweight grease (C1AZ-19590-B) to the intermediate shaft connection using the following procedure:

Figure 9:

1. Remove the retainer assembly from the steering column-to-intermediate shaft connection, Figure 9.

2. Separate the steering column from the intermediate shaft.

3. Apply a generous amount of heavy grease (C1AZ- 19590-B) in the vee of the steering column side of the slip joint, Figure 9.

NOTE: Do not use a lightweight grease or oil.

4. Install the intermediate shaft into steering column vee joint.

Figure 10:

5. Install the retainer assembly and tighten the nuts to 15-25 ft.lbs. (20-33 N-m), Figure 10.
