1. Raise vehicle on hoist and check front suspension fasteners and torque to the proper specifications as required. (See Figure 7)

2. Remove wheel and tire assemblies from vehicle and inspect the coil spring in the right hand side spring tower and observe if one of the spring coils is rubbing the head of the engine damper bracket attaching bolt. If the bolt is of hex head design, replace if with retainer assembly (N804526-S100). (See Figure 8)

3. Remove the front strut and spring assembly from the vehicle as outlined in the appropriate Car Shop Manual. Before disassembly, visually inspect position of spring in upper spring seat. (See Figure 9)

4. Place strut and spring assembly in spring compressor tool D85P-7178-A, or Rotunda Model 086-00029, and disassemble.

5. Check shock strut for loose rod as shown in Figure 10. Replace shock strut if noisy or if rod is loose within tube.


6. If Steps 1-5 have NOT indicated the source of the noise, proceed to Step 7. If Steps 1-5 have indicated the noise source, proceed to Step 9.

7. Remove rubber insulator from upper bearing and seat assembly and discard. (See Figure 11)

8. Install sleeve on top coil of front spring as shown in Figure 11. Refer to Figure 12 (Page 7) to identify which sleeve should be used for subject vehicle, proceed to Step 9.


9. Assemble shock strut, spring and upper mount using spring compressor tool D85P-7178-A, or Rotunda Model 086-00029.

NOTE: Be sure the spring is properly centered in both upper (Figure 9) and lower spring seats. If paint is rubbed off spring, lightly coat the area with Super Seal Anti-Corrosion Compound.

10. Install shock strut and spring assembly into vehicle.

11. Install wheel and tire assemblies and lower vehicle.
