Windshield Wipers - Noisy Operation
Article No. 86-12-4WIPER/WASHER - ARM AND BLADE ASSEMBLY - NOISY OPERATION - DRIVER'S SIDE ONLY
FORD 1986 TAURUS
LINCOLN-MERCURY 1986 SABLE
During high or low speed operation on a wet windshield, a metal-to-metal noise may be heard coming from the driver's side windshield wiper. This may be caused by insufficient clearance between the lower portion of the wiper blade frame and the wiper arm link. This can be corrected by replacing only the wiper arm assembly with an improved design part.
NOTE: Be sure to save the blade assembly for reinstallation.
1. Obtain new replacement (driver's side) windshield wiper arm assembly.
2. Turn on the wiper switch, allow the motor to move the pivot shafts three or four cycles, then turn off the switch. This procedure will place the pivot shafts in the PARK position.
Figure 5:
3. Remove the driver's side wiper arm and blade assembly by first applying downward pressure on the wiper arm head, while holding the wiper arm. Then lift the arm to the highest position and using finger pressure only, grasp the slide latch tab and slide the latch out from under the arm head (Figure 5) and remove the arm and blade assembly.
CAUTION: To prevent glass and/or paint damage, do not pry the arm pivot with metal or a sharp tool.
4. To remove the blade assembly, insert a screwdriver into the slot provided at the top of the blade frame (as shown in View B), push down on spring lock and pull the blade assembly from the wiper arm pin.
5. Install the blade assembly onto the new replacement (driver's side) wiper arm assembly.
6. To install the windshield wiper arm, position the arm's articulating link to the pivot pin and engage onto the pin.
7. Position the bottom surface of the wiper arm parallel with the top surface of the leaf screen louvers, ensuring the arm rests against the top surface of the leaf screen. Install the arm onto the pivot shaft with the latch slide in the unlatched (outward) position (View A).
8. While applying downward pressure on the arm head, to ensure full seating, raise the other end of the arm sufficiently to allow the latch to slide under the pivot assembly to the latched position.
9. Lift the (latched) wiper arm and blade assembly away from the top surface of the leaf screen louvers and position the arm only on the rearward surface of the wiper arm stop.
10. Make sure the blade is fully seated onto the arm and the arm is against (rearward of) the wiper stop, before operating the wipers to verify the correction.
