IDLE - BODY BOOM - 3.0L IMPROVED PROCESSOR

FORD 1986 TAURUS

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1986 SABLE
CALIBRATION: 3.0L

WARNING: This modification is authorized only for the listed engines. Performing this modification on other engine calibrations is unauthorized and could create liability under applicable federal or local laws.

Rolling idle, body boom or stalls after cold start may be caused by the fuel and idle speed control strategies of the engine calibration. To correct this, install a new processor assembly, E6DZ-12A650-MK (50 State) or E6DZ-12A650-AFK (Canada) using the following service procedure.

1. Install processor assembly E6DZ-12A650-MK (50 State) or E6DZ-12A650-AFK (Canada).

2. Set the curb idle (hardstop) to 760 RPM using the following procedure.

NOTE: If the following procedure is not performed, an improper idle speed and unacceptable driveability will result.

3. Place the transmission in Neutral or Park, turn the A/C-Heat selector lever to the "Off" position. Apply the parking brake and block the wheels.

4. Bring the engine to normal operating temperature. Check for vacuum leaks downstream of the throttle plates. Service as required.

5. Unplug the SPOUT connector and verify the ignition initial timing is 10~ BTDC +/- 2~. If the initial timing is not to specification, service as required.

Figure 12:

6. Shut off the engine and disconnect the air bypass valve assembly connector, Figure 12.

NOTE: Not disconnecting the air bypass valve assembly will result in a low throttle plate set and a low idle speed (rolling idle cold and decel stalls).

7. Remove the PCV entry line at the PCV valve.

8. Install the Orifice Tool T86P-9600-A (0.200 inch orifice diameter) in the PCV entry line and start the engine.

NOTE: Not using the Orifice Tool in the PCV entry line will result in a high throttle plate set and a high idle speed (rolling idle hot).

9. Apply the parking brake and block the wheels. Idle the vehicle with an automatic transmission in Drive or Park. With a manual transmission, idle in Neutral.

NOTE: If the electric cooling fan comes on during the idle set procedure, unplug the fan motor power leads or wait until the fan switches off.

Figure 12:

10. Adjust the throttle plate stop screw for 760 RPM in Drive or 980 RPM in Park or Neutral, Figure 12.

NOTE: When setting the hardstop RPM, it is critical to use an accurate tachometer.

11. After the idle has been set, shut off the engine.

12. Restart the vehicle and idle the vehicle for 3 to 5 minutes. Make sure the idle speed is set to the specification in Step 10.

13. If the idle speed is not to the specification of Step 10, repeat Step 10.

14. Shut off the engine.

15. Disconnect the negative battery terminal for 5 minutes.

16. Remove the Orifice Tool and reconnect the PCV entry line.

17. Reconnect the spout connector.

18. Reconnect the air bypass valve assembly.

19. Reconnect the electric cooling fan if unplugged.

20. Verify that the throttle plate is not stuck in the throttle bore and that the throttle plate stop screw is setting on the rest pad with the throttle closed.

21. Reconnect the negative battery terminal.

22. Restart the engine. With the transmission in Neutral, hold the engine speed at 2000 RPM for 30-45 seconds then allow the engine to return to idle. Run the engine at idle to 3 to 5 minutes then check the idle speed. The idle should be 700 RPM in Neutral or Drive.

23. Check and adjust the throttle valve (TV) linkage. Refer to the 1986 Taurus/Sable Shop Manual, Section 17-15-11.

NOTE: The nominal controlled idle speed will be 700 RPM after performing the above steps.

Obtain an Authorized Modifications Decal and list the date, dealer number, and summary of alterations performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
