Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Technical Instructions:

MAKE SURE IGNITION KEY IS "OFF", PARKING BRAKES APPLIED AND REAR WHEELS BLOCKED.

1. Car must be at room temperature, approximately 65~-70~F(18-24~C).

2. Carefully disconnect all electrical connectors from backlite glass.

3. Thoroughly wash inside and outside of glass to remove road salt and dirt. Wipe dry.

TAURUS/SABLE STATION WAGONBACKLITE GLASS BREAKAGE:

4. Refer to Attachment I. Place shop light behind backlite glass. Inspect wiper motor buss bar. If buss bar width at its narrowest point is less than 1/2 of its original width go directly to Step #14 and replace glass.

TAURUS/SABLE STATION WAGONBACKLITE GLASS BREAKAGE:

5. If the buss bar width, at its narrowest point, is more that 1/2 of its original width, clean glass with rubbing alcohol (isopropyl) where tape and RTV sealer are to be applied, see Attachment 5, "shaded" areas.

TAURUS/SABLE STATION WAGONBACKLITE GLASS BREAKAGE:

TAURUS/SABLE STATION WAGONBACKLITE GLASS BREAKAGE:

6. Open glass and lift gate to position shown in Attachment 2, Figure 1. DO NOT DISCONNECT GAS CYLINDERS FROM GLASS/LIFT GATE.

7. Stand on rear load floor, with your body up through liftgate opening, to reach glass when applying tape and RTV sealer (See Attachment 2, Figure 2).

TAURUS/SABLE STATION WAGONBACKLITE GLASS BREAKAGE:

8. Apply bottom piece of tape first, as follows:

A. Remove brown backing from one side of the tape. Using lift gate handle as a guide, tape along bottom edge of glass (see Attachment 3).
B. Smooth out any air bubbles and then remove "white" protective backing from tape.

TAURUS/SABLE STATION WAGONBACKLITE GLASS BREAKAGE:

9. Position side pieces of tape as follows:

A. Make sure there is 1/8" overlap of the side tape where it meets the bottom tape (see Attachment 4).
B. Remove brown backing and stick tape to glass.

C. Smooth out any air bubbles and then remove white protective backing from tape.

10. Read carefully the following hazard warning concerning Silastic Brand 737 RTV Neutral Cure Silicone Adhesive/Sealant before continuing.

CAUTION: IRRITATES EYES. MAY IRRITATE NOSE, THROAT AND RESPIRATORY TRACT. MAY CAUSE ALLERGIC SKIN SENSITIZATION. Avoid eye contact. Avoid prolonged breathing of vapors. Avoid prolonged or repeated skin contact. Use with adequate ventilation. IN CASE OF EYE CONTACT, flush with water for 15 minutes, obtain immediate medical attention. IN CASE OF SKIN CONTACT, wipe off and flush with water. During cure ethylmethylketoxime vapor is released. KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN.
11. Heeding the warning, apply that adhesive/sealant around connector terminals as follows:

TAURUS/SABLE STATION WAGONBACKLITE GLASS BREAKAGE:

A. Remove brown backing from sealer masks and stick mask to glass as shown in Attachment 5 (upper terminals, RH and LH).

NOTE: APPLY SEALANT TO THE OUTER RIGHT HAND AND LEFT HAND TERMINALS ONLY.

TAURUS/SABLE STATION WAGONBACKLITE GLASS BREAKAGE:

B. Remove brown backing from sealer masks and stick mask to glass as shown in Attachment 6 for the lower terminals.
C. Using a small fine bristle brush, apply a heavy coating of adhesive/sealant (approx. 1/16 inch thick) on area inside of mask, including terminal attachment to glass.

NOTE: APPLY THE HEAVY COAT AS SMOOTHLY AS POSSIBLE. DO NOT GET ADHESIVE/SEALANT ON ELECTRICAL TERMINAL BLADES WHICH PLUG INTO WIRE CONNECTORS.

D. After adhesive/sealant has been applied, immediately remove mask, without smearing adhesive/sealant.

12. Carefully install connectors to terminals on glass.

13. Verify function of wiper and heated backlite system. Retain car with tailgate open for a minimum of 30 minutes.

14. If backlite replacement is necessary, per instruction #4 - see 1987 Taurus/Sable Shop Manual, Section 42-07 page 2 and Section 35-60 Page 12 for wiper motor replacement.

NOTE: Remove and retain all backlite glass to lift gate attachments for use when installing the new backlite glass.

TAURUS/SABLE STATION WAGONBACKLITE GLASS BREAKAGE:

CAUTION: When installing the wiper motor into the new backlite glass, be certain that the lip on the inside rubber grommet (gasket) is fully inserted into the hole in the glass (See Attachment 7). This will prevent any possibility of metal-to-glass contact. Re-attach motor, hinge and gas strut pivot buttons to glass as follows:

- Torque the wiper drive pivot nut to 15-20 N-m. (11-14 ft.lb.).

- Torque the handle/motor bracket attachment nut to 5-8 N-m. (4-6 ft.lb.).

Torque the hinge and gas strut pivot buttons to 11-14 N-m. (8-10 ft.lb.). CAUTION: This torque setting is critical and must be maintained within this range.

Before reassembly of wiper arm to wiper drive pivot, lubricate wiper drive pivot serrations with C3AZ-19578-A grease or equivalent.
15. Carefully install connectors to terminals on glass.

16. Verify function of wiper and heated backlite systems.

SAFETY RECALL 87S25 - CERTAIN 1986/1987 TAURUS AND SABLE STATION WAGONS FOR MODIFICATION OR REPLACEMENT OF BACKLITE GLASS

Dear Owner:

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the U.S. National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Ford Motor Company has determined that a defect related to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 1986 and 1987 Taurus and Sable station wagons.

REASONS FOR THIS RECALL:

The liftgate windows of some station wagons equipped with rear window wipers/washers may fracture without warning. This would result from thermal stress due to corrosion of a portion of the wiper motor electrical circuit that is bonded to the window surface. If the glass were to fracture, a loud "bang" would be heard. This could distract the driver and possibly affect the driver's control of the car. An accident could result. Although the windows are made of safety glass, some risk of injury to passengers in optional rear facing third row seats is also present if the glass fractures.

At no cost to you, your dealer will repair the rear window electrical circuits. The time needed to do this work is about one hour. Dealers currently have instructions and parts ordering information.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO:

Please call your dealer, without delay, and ask for a service date. Before your car is serviced, you may lessen the risk of liftgate glass fracture from thermal stress by not operating the rear window wiper/washer. When you bring your car in, give the attached form to the dealer. If you misplace the form, your dealer will still do the work, free of charge. If you are no longer the owner, please fill out Section 1 of the enclosed prepaid postcard and mail it to us.

If the dealer does not make the repair promptly and without charge, complete Section 3 of the prepaid postcard and mail it to us. You may also send a complaint to the Administrator, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 400 Seventh Street, SW, Washington, DC 20590 or call the
toll free Auto Safety Hotline 800-424-9393.

We regret the inconvenience this service may cause you; but, we want you to have the work completed for your safety and satisfaction with your Ford-built car.
