This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act of Canada.
Ford Motor Company of Canada, Limited (Ford) has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 1986, 1987, 1988 and 1989 Taurus and Sable cars. Affected cars are those sold or primarily operated in the eastern portions of Canada where extremely large amounts of road salts are used for road dust and ice control. Our records show you own the 19XX (vehicle) bearing the serial number shown above your name and address on this letter.
Safety Defect
When operated primarily in areas where large quantities of road salts are used for road dust and ice control, the front brake rotors on your car may corrode and progressively weaken. Eventually one of the rotors may fracture. If this occurs, the car may "pull" to one side during braking. In addition, stopping distances may be increased. A collision could result. A fractured rotor typically would produce a loud grinding or rattling noise.
Repairs
At no cost to you, your dealer will inspect and, if necessary, replace both front brake rotors on your car.
How Long Will It Take
The time needed to service your car is less than two hours. However, due to service scheduling times, your dealer may need your car for one full working day.
Call Your Dealer
Call your dealer without delay and ask for a service date. Also ask your dealer to check the CARES / OASIS systems for any outstanding recalls. If parts are not in stock, they can be ordered before scheduling your service date. Parts would be expected to arrive within a week.
If you have leased this vehicle to another person or organization, please immediately notify the lessee of this recall.
When you bring in your vehicle, show the dealer this letter. If you lose the letter, your dealer will still do the work, free of charge.
Special Service Note
After inspection, your dealer may also recommend replacement of the front brake pads or other brake related maintenance when your car is in for the recall repairs. Such service would be routine maintenance or repairs unrelated to the recall. These services would be charged to the owner.
Refunds
If you have previously paid to have the brake rotors on your car replaced due to a corrosion related fracture of one of the rotors, Ford is offering a refund including deductible amounts. For a refund, please give the original copy of your paid work order to your Ford or Mercury dealer. Your dealer will arrange for the refund (which could take about one month). In addition, your car will need to be inspected to determine if the proper rotors were installed. If the proper rotors were not installed, the rotors will again be replaced.
Changed Your Name, Address, or Sold the Vehicle?
If you have changed your name or address, or have sold the vehicle, please complete the enclosed prepaid postcard. Sign and date it, and mail the card to Ford.
If you cannot get the service performed, contact the "National Owner Relations Office", or the nearest Ford of Canada Regional Office. The addresses and telephone numbers for these offices are shown in your Vehicle's Owner Guide. Your dealer can also provide you with this information. Please identify your vehicle's serial number in any correspondence.
We regret the inconvenience this service may cause you, but we want you to have the work done for your safety and satisfaction with your Ford-built vehicle.
