FORD: 1986-88 TAURUS
LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1986-88 SABLE
ISSUE: Cut or torn steering column shift lever opening seals may be caused by the casting flash left on the shift lever socket. Movement of the steering column shift lever can deform the shift lever opening seal and cause the seal to contact the casting flash.
ACTION: To correct this, remove the casting flash on the shift lever socket and replace the shift lever opening seal using the following service procedure.
1. Remove upper shroud and shift lever from socket. Refer to the Taurus/Sable Shop Manual, Section 13-04.

2. Remove casting flash, sharp edges, from shift lever socket, Figure 2.
3. Reinstall shift lever into socket using a new shift lever pin (E6DZ-7G357-A).

4. Replace shift lever opening seal by carefully gripping edge of retainer with long-nose pliers until retainer is bent or cracks in half. Remove retainers and seal, Figure 3.

NOTE: Both posts on steering column upper shroud must be intact, Figure 4. If one or both posts are broken off, upper shroud must be replaced. The new shroud will be in prime and must be painted to match.

5. Place the new seal over the posts on upper shroud and install new retainers supplied with new color-keyed seal, Figure 5.
Refer to the Application Chart below for the color-keyed shift lever opening seals.
6. Reinstall shroud.
