Timing Belt: Adjustments

Timing belt, sprockets & related components:

FRONT
1. Remove flywheel timing mark cover.
2. Remove front timing belt upper cover.
3. Remove timing belt tension spring from front cover.
4. Install tensioner spring into belt tensioner lever and over crankcase stud, Fig. 16.
5. Loosen tensioner pulley lock bolt.
6. Rotate crankshaft pulley two revolutions clockwise until flywheel TDC timing mark aligns with pointer on rear cover plate, Fig. 17. Ensure front camshaft sprocket is aligned with its timing mark, Fig. 21.
7. Torque tensioner lock bolt to 23---34 ft. lbs. Using a suitable belt tension gauge, check belt tension, Fig. 14. Belt tension should be 33---44 lbs.
8. Remove tensioner spring and install spring into front cover.
9. Install front cover. Torque front cover bolts to 5---7 ft. lbs.
10. Install flywheel timing mark cover.

REAR
1. Remove flywheel timing mark cover.
2. Remove rear timing belt cover.
3. Rotate crankshaft pulley two revolutions clockwise until flywheel TDC timing mark aligns with pointer on rear cover plate, Fig. 17. Ensure injection pump and camshaft sprocket timing marks are aligned with their marks, Fig. 18.
4. Torque tensioner locknut to 15---20 ft. lbs.
5. Using a suitable belt tension gauge, check belt tension, Fig. 20. Belt tension should be 22---33 lbs.
6. Install rear timing belt cover. Torque the 6 mm rear cover bolts to 5---9 ft. lbs., torque the 8 mm rear cover bolts to 12---16 ft. lbs.
7. Install flywheel timing mark cover.
