Reports from the field have been received which indicate problems in identifying 2.3L HSC (Base) and 2.3L HSO (Plus) engines. The 1986 EEC IV diagnostic procedures and some engine component differ between the HSC (Base) and HSO (Plus) engines.

These engines can be identified by using the 8th position of the VIN code, X (Base) and S (Plus), or using the calibration number from the engine decal (see Figure 5). Refer to the chart below for engine and diagnostic application.
