Tie Rod - Retention Pin Update

Article No. 86-8-10

TIE ROD - ALUMINUM DRIVE RIVET REPLACES THE COILED PIN
- POWER STEERING

FORD 1986 ESCORT, TEMPO

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1986 LYNX, TOPAZ

Figure 10:

An aluminum drive rivet was incorporated at the power steering gear tie rod starting Job 1, 1986, on the subject vehicles. The rivet replaces the coiled pin at the inner ball joint of the tie rod (Figure 10). There has been no change made to the tie rod, so either the coiled pin or the rivet may be used when servicing the power steering gear.

Figure 11:

Figure 12:

The rivet can be removed by using a sharp chisel and gently tapping around the head of the rivet to lift upward from the joint (Figure 11). With a pair of side cutters, pry out the rivet (Figure 12).

Figure 13:

The rivet can easily be installed by inserting it into the hole and tapping the pin of the rivet with a hammer until it is flush with the head of the rivet (Figure 13).
