FORD: 1985-87 TEMPO
LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1985-87 TOPAZ
ISSUE: Intermittent driveability and transmission concerns that cannot be found with normal diagnostics (no service codes present) may be caused by basic engine and transmission settings that are out-of-adjustment or not set to the proper specifications.
ACTION: To correct this, be sure to check the following items:
1. Engine timing should be 10~ BTDC. See Section 15 of the Engine/Emission Diagnosis Shop Manual, Volume H.
2. Hard stop idle speed must be properly set. Refer to TSB 86-19-12 for 1985-86 specifications by calibration.
1987 ATX/FLC calibration setting: 600 RPM
1987 MTX calibration setting: 640 RPM
3. For service procedure to adjust the Throttle Valve (TV) rod, refer to TSB 86-3-20.
NOTE: When the Idle Speed Control (ISCDC) motor is connected, it is controlling "learned idle" to the specification of the calibration.
