LINCOLN-MERCURY 1985-86 TOPAZ

High or erratic engine idle speeds may be caused by "electrical noise" entering the EEC IV processor at the Power Steering Pressure Switch (PSPS) and Self-Test Input (STI) Signal Lines. This may be corrected by checking the condition following the diagnostic/repair procedure below and installing the 1986 processor per the application chart.

Service Procedure

1. Evaluate the vehicle for customer concern. If idle speeds are erratic or high, proceed to the diagnostic procedures on pages 25 and 26 and repair as indicated. Continue with Step 2 of this procedure after the diagnostics have been completed.

2. Idle the vehicle for two minutes with the engine at full operating temperature with the transmission in gear for ATX or in Neutral for MTX. Parking brake and service brake applied! This is to reset the adaptive idle speed control. (Learning is for processor replacement.)

3. Reset the throttle body hard stop to 625 RPM in Drive for ATX, and 720 RPM in Neutral for MTX.

NOTE: ISC must be fully retracted and electrically unplugged to adjust hard stop speed.

4. Adjust TV rod to specifications, ATX only.

5. Idle the vehicle for two minutes with the engine at full operating temperature with the transmission in gear for ATX or in Neutral for MTX. Parking brake and service brake applied! This is to reset the adaptive idle speed control. (Learning is for adjustments made.)

6. Perform the EEC IV Quick Test to ensure the system is operating properly.

NOTE: If any codes are received from the 1986 level processor, the 1986 Diagnostics must be used in Volume H.

Obtain an Authorized Modifications Decal and list the date, dealer number, and summary of alterations performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
