Grille - Moisture On the Inside Surface
86ford23 Article No. 86-3-2GRILLE - MOISTURE (CONDENSATION) COLLECTS ON THE INSIDE SURFACE OF GRILLE COVER
LINCOLN-MERCURY 1986 TOPAZ
Early production vehicles, built from the start of production to October 21, 1985, may accumulate moisture (condensation) inside the grille cover. The accumulation of moisture in the grille is caused by a poor bond between the grille cover front and back. Affected vehicles can be reworked to correct this condition by adding three "drain" holes (two small and one large) in the bottom of the cover, and one small hole in each end of the cover to create air "turbulence" inside the cover, which will dry out any moisture. Rework as follows:
1. Remove the radiator opening cover by disengaging the eight "snap-in" retaining legs.
Figure 1:
2. Carefully drill one 1/2 inch hole and two 3/8 inch holes in the bottom of the cover (total three). Refer to Figure 1 for specific information and locations.
3. Carefully drill one 3/8 inch hole in each end of the cover (total two). Refer to Figure 1 for specific information and locations.
4. Drain or shake out as much existing moisture as possible.
NOTE: Any remaining moisture will be "dried out" in a short time by air "turbulence" created by the car being driven.
5. Position cover to grille opening panel and push in to engage "snap-in" retaining legs.
