^ NOISE - INDUCTION UNDER ACCELERATION - 2.3L HSC CFI AND HSC PLUS - AIR CLEANER OUTLET TUBE

ISSUE: Induction noise during acceleration may be caused by the air cleaner outlet tube. The outlet tube may disconnect at the throttle body or air cleaner cover.


ACTION: Install a new outlet tube and secure it with closed end pop rivets. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

1. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube and air cleaner cover from the vehicle.

2. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube from the air cleaner cover and throw it away.

3. Obtain a new outlet tube (E73Z-9B659-C).

4. Inspect the air cleaner cover for damage (buckling, cracks or other distortions). If damaged, replace it with air cleaner assembly (E63Z-9661-A).

5. Install the new air cleaner outlet tube to the air cleaner cover. Torque clamp to 15-20 in.lbs. (1.7-2.3 N-m).

6. Drill and install four (4) 3/16 inch diameter X .720 in. closed-end pop rivets (390428-S100) 90 degrees apart, through the clamp, seal, tube and air cleaner cover, Figure 4. Position the rivets 7/16 in. (11 mm) from the end of the tube with the rivet head on the outside of the tube.

CAUTION: THE RIVETS MUST BE CLOSED-END ALUMINUM TYPE WITH AN ALUMINUM MANDREL. DO NOT USE OPEN-END RIVETS OR DAMAGE COULD OCCUR IF THE MANDREL FALLS INTO THE THROTTLE BODY.

7. Drill and install one (1) 3/16 inch diameter X .595 in. closed-end pop rivet (389991-S) to secure the hose clamp to the hose at the throttle body end of the air outlet tube. The rivet head should be on the inside of the tube. Position the rivet so that it is located at the rear side of the throttle body inlet and is about 7/16 in. (11 mm) from the end of the tube, Figure 4.

NOTE: THE RIVET HEAD SHOULD SECURE THE INNER LAYER OF THE RUBBER SEAL.

8. Install air outlet tube and air cleaner assembly. Torque the clamp at the throttle body end to 15- 20 in.lbs. (1.7-2.3 N-m).
