Article No. 86-24-10

WIPER - INTERVAL - LOW SPEED INOPERATIVE

FORD 1986 TEMPO

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1986 TOPAZ

Windshield wipers that are inoperative in the interval or low speed modes may have a short between the connector pins inside the governor assembly. To correct this, first inspect the connector pins for damage. If damage is present, install a new governor assembly and interval wiper switch using the following procedure:

1. Remove the governor assembly using the 1986 Car Shop Manual, Volume C, Section 35-60-34.

Figure 8:

2. Remove the cover from the governor assembly and inspect the connector pins for damage or discoloration, see Figure 8. If either condition is found, replace both the governor assembly (E63Z-17C- 476-A) and the interval wiper switch (E63Z-17A- 553-B). Use the 1986 Shop Manual, Volume C, Section 35-60-33 for interval wiper switch replacement.

NOTE: Prior to replacing the interval wiper switch, inspect the date code stamp. The date code must read "6EC" (1986, May, 3rd week). See Figure 8. Do not use interval wiper switches dated prior to this date code.
