M/T - Jumps Out of 2nd or 4th Gear

86ford22 Article No. 86-4-13

TRANSMISSION - MTX - JUMP OUT OF 2ND OR 4TH GEAR

FORD 1985-1986 ESCORT, EXP, TEMPO

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1985-1986 LYNX, TOPAZ

This article cancels and supersedes TSB 86-2-18 and is being re-issued to correct Step 4 of the repair procedure.

MTX equipped vehicles built between March 1, 1985, and February 3, 1986 (models RJS and RWB) may occasionally experience a 2nd or 4th gear jump-out condition. This condition is caused by stretching of the shift lever boot due to boot-to-powertrain stack-up tolerances, excessive engagement of the upshift light top gear switch (MTXII 4-speed only) and to shift detent forces within the transaxle.

To resolve this condition:

Figure 25:

1. Check to be sure that the shift lever boot is seated correctly in the top opening of the console or consolette. Figure 25

Figure 26:

2. If the vehicle is equipped with MTXII 4-speed transaxle, inspect the paddle that operates the upshift light top gear switch. Bend the paddle so the switch is depressed only 4 mm (.16") when the transmission is in 4th gear. Be sure to confirm switch function upon completion of repair. Figure 26

3. Place a jack stand under the engine and carefully lift just enough to remove tension on the rubber engine mounts. Loosen the front and rear engine mounts (Figures 27 and 28) and the rear shifter-tobody mounts (Figure 29). Move the engine as far forward as the slots in the engine mounts allow. Retighten the engine mounts in the following order: 1, 3A and then 4, and the shifter mounts.

Figure 30:

4. Remove the detent plunger retainer screw Figure 30). Leakage from the transaxle will occur when removing the detent plunger screw. To minimize oil leakage, plug hole with your finger until you are ready to replace retainer screw with E6FZ-7233-A Kit - Transmission Detent Plunger and Spring.

NOTE: If excessive amount of oil has leaked out, check transaxle fluid level after installation of cartridge assembly.

Figure 31:

Install the detent cartridge, spring and detent plunger as an assembly (Figure 31). Threads of cartridge must be coated with D8AZ-19554-A sealant with teflon and torque detent cartridge to 66-96 in.lbs. torque.
5. For 2.0L diesel engine equipped Escort/Lynx and Tempo/Topaz applications only, this cartridge fix must be accompanied by replacing the shift boot assembly (E6FZ-7277-B).
