ISSUE: Distorted sound and/or an irritating noise from the rear speakers of vehicles equipped with AM/FM stereo Electronic Tuned Radios (ETR) without premium sound may be caused by the design of the 19A170 wire harness. The 19A170 wire harness was originally designed for use with Electronic Search Radios (ESR) and Electronic Search Cassette (ESC). A late model change replaced the ESR/ESC radios with the ETR radios which are not compatible with the original wiring circuit.
ACTION: To correct this, rework the 19A170 wire harness adding the 801 and 803 circuits using the following service procedure.
Figure 3:
1. Remove the radio chassis from the instrument panel, locate the speaker connector C-1112 and remove the protective cover, Figure 3.
2. Obtain two lengths of 16 Ga. wire; one about seven feet long, the other about four feet long, and crimp terminal (E6DZ-14474-C) to one end of each wire.
3. Remove the existing circuit 801 and 803 terminals from the C-1112 connector.
4. Install the new terminals into the appropriate slots in the C-1112 connector, Figure 3. The four foot wire circuit 801 in slot 4, the seven foot wire circuit 803 into slot 8. Reinstall protective cover on connector C-1112.
5. Remove the underdash insulation sound panels (right and left).
6. Remove the right hand cowl side trim panel.
7. Route the seven foot wire to the right kick panel and locate connector C-1108.
8. Route the four foot wire to the left side of vehicle to connector C-1107 near parking brake.
9. Cut the existing black with white stripe wire in connectors C-1107 and C-1108 about two inches from connectors and butt splice the wire routed to these locations, Figure 3. Tape back the cut unused wire.
10. Install the right hand cowl side trim panel.
11. Install the right and left hand underdash insulation sound panels.
12. Install the radio chassis into the instrument panel.
