87ford19
Number: 87S34
PLEASE GIVE COPIES OF THIS BULLETIN TO YOUR PARTS AND SERVICE MANAGERS

August, 1987

To: Selected North American Ford and Lincoln/Mercury Product Dealers and Affiliated Ford Motor Companies

Subject: Safety Recall 87S34 - Certain 1987 Ford Crown Victoria/Mercury Grand Marquis and 1988 Lincoln Town Cars with 5.0L SEFI Engines - Fuel Rail

VEHICLES INVOLVED:

Certain 1987 Ford Crown Victoria/Mercury Grand Marquis vehicles built at the St. Thomas Assembly Plant from July 21 through July 30, 1987 and equipped with 5.0L SEFI engines.

Certain 1988 Lincoln Town Cars built at the Wixom Assembly Plant from July 20 through July 30, 1987 and equipped with 5.0L SEFI engines.

DESCRIPTION OF THE DEFECT:

On some of these cars the fuel rails may be bent so that the No. 5 injector cups are out of design position. A bent fuel rail could cause a fuel leak, which in the presence of an ignition source could result in an engine fire.

NOTIFICATION OF OWNERS/DEALER ACTIONS:

The enclosed list identifies vehicles destined or delivered to your dealership which are involved in this recall. If no vehicle listing is enclosed, you are not involved at this time, and this Service Recall Bulletin is for information only.

Dealers are to inspect, and if necessary, replace the fuel rail assemblies. Some of these cars were corrected at the assembly plants. The uncorrected cars are on delivery hold. Do not drive, demonstrate or deliver any of these cars until they have been inspected/corrected.

For dealers in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands - the uncorrected vehicles are identified by VIN number in both CARES and OASIS.
IMPORTANT:

Dealers should contact owners who have taken delivery of any of the affected vehicles and advise them to immediately return their vehicles for this service.

TECHNICAL INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Check to see whether the fuel rail is straight between the No. 5 and No. 6 injector cups. Use a piece of 1/4 inch diameter round stock at least 5.5 inches long and verify straightness on a flat surface. Place it along the rail between the No. 5 and No. 6 Injector cups being careful to avoid braze beads on rail.

Largest permissible gap between fuel rail and 1/4 inch rod is 0.025 inch. Use 0.025 inch feeler gauge in any gap between fuel rail and rod. If 0.025 inch feeler gauge will not pass through gap, fuel rail is OK. Release the vehicle.

If 0.025 inch feeler gauge passes through the gap, the rail is bent and must be removed and replaced. Refer to Volume D, Section 24-04-10 of the 1987 Car Shop Manual for the replacement procedures.

Note: Be sure to use clean light grade oil (ESE-M2C39-F) or equivalent on "O"-rings when servicing the spring lock inlet and outlet coupling and injectors for ease of reassembly.

2. Reinstall the spring clip on the spring lock inlet and outlet coupling.

3. When this action is completed, the car may be released from the delivery hold.

4. Mutilate and scrap the removed fuel rails.
