ISSUE: A new design power steering pump outlet quick connect fitting was used on about 6000 vehicles. The pump can be easily identified by its HBC-JL model code. Figure 1 shows the comparison between the 1990 and prior year designs.
ACTION: If service is required, refer to the following service procedure when replacing the hose or pump.
HOSE REPLACEMENT
1. Remove hose assembly.
2. Obtain replacement hose (E0AZ-3A719-A), outlet fitting (E5LY-3D654-A), small o-ring (384975-S94) and large o-ring (391032-S).
3. Replace the outlet fitting on the power steering pump with outlet fitting (E5LY-3D654-A) along with the two o-rings.
4. Install replacement hose.
NOTE: AFTER JOB # 1, 1990, AVAILABLE 1990 LEVEL SERVICE HOSE MAY BE USED WITHOUT MODIFICATION.
PUMP REPLACEMENT
Replacement of the pump assembly requires transfer of the outlet fitting from the removed pump to the new pump.
1. Obtain a pair of o-rings (384975-S94 & 391032-S) along with the replacement pump.
2. Remove the outlet fitting from the old pump and install it on the new pump using the new o-rings.
3. Install power steering pump. Refer to the 1989 Car Shop Manual, Section 13-51 for service details.
4. Install new plastic seal washer (388898-S) on the hose fitting.
5. Assemble hose to pump.
NOTE: AFTER JOB # 1, 1990, AVAILABLE 1990 LEVEL SERVICE PUMPS MAY BE USED WITHOUT FITTING TRANSFER.
