ISSUE: Speed control systems that may respond more rapidly than customers are comfortable with may be caused by the transmission downshifting from fourth gear to second gear while using the speed control "Resume" or "Accel" modes. The vehicles are equipped with an aspirator connected to the thermactor air pump. The aspirator provides an additional vacuum source to improve speed control performance during periods of high engine load.
Figure 2 - ASPIRATOR:
ACTION: This condition is normal. However, customer concerns may be eliminated by modifying the speed control system using the following service procedure.
1. Disconnect vacuum hose at aspirator, Figure 2.
2. Plug vacuum hose and tie it out of the way to make sure it is not mistakenly reconnected later.
3. The aspirator does not have to be capped.
NOTE: Owners should be told that speed control performance on hilly or mountainous terrain will probably be reduced but performance under normal conditions will remain satisfactory. Also, it may be preferable to drive in "D" (overdrive lockout) while driving in hilly terrain.
