AIR CONDITIONING - ATC - OUTPUT WARMER THAN CONTROL SETTING TEMPERATURE - VEHICLES BUILT BEFORE 3/18/88

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1987-88 GRAND MARQUIS

ISSUE: Air conditioning output that is 12 to 16~F (7 to 9~C) above the ATC temperature control setting may be caused by an inadequate seal between the right hand instrument panel applique and the instrument panel or a contaminated temperature sensor. The inadequate seal and contamination causes the temperature sensor to send cooler than actual temperature readings to the ATC control.

ACTION: To correct this, install a supplemental foam seal on the back side of the instrument panel applique and new temperature sensor with an internal filter, if required, on vehicles built before 3/18/88. On vehicles built before 5/01/87, install a new temperature sensor with an internal filter. Refer to the following service procedure.

1. Remove instrument panel pad.

2. Position the instrument panel applique out from the instrument panel.

3. Obtain a supplemental foam seal, (E9MY-19C960-A) and peel adhesive covering off.

3. Install foam seal on back side of applique over sensor opening. Be sure foam seal butts against the bottom of top flange of the applique panel, Figure 4.

4. Install the new temperature sensor,(E3VY- 19C734-A) as outlined in the Car Shop Manual, Volume A, Section 36-70-21.

5. Install instrument panel pad.
