LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1987 MERCURY
ISSUE: Fuel pump noise on the 1987 Ford/Mercury Station Wagons may be caused by the lack of sound-deadening material.
ACTION: To correct this, insulate the underside of the fuel tank using four (4) pieces of .090" thick self-sticking plastic sealer. Refer to the following service procedure for installation.
NOTE: Attaching the plastic sealers to the fuel tank will provide effective sound insulation.
1. Refer to the 1987 Car Shop Manual, Section 24-50 for removal of the fuel tank.
2. Clean the under side of the fuel tank where the sealer will be applied.
Figure 9:
3. Remove the protective backing from the four (4) sheets of sealer. Attach sealer to the underside (pump side) of the tank where contact is made with the vehicle underbody. See Figure 9.
NOTE: Cut a hole in upper piece of sheet "A" to allow for the breather vent.
4. Reinstall fuel tank as outlined in Section 24-50 of the 1987 Car Shop Manual.
