ISSUE: A rattling noise from the transmission shifter housing and lever assembly while traveling on rough roads may be caused by the spring tension of the transmission shifter assembly being too weak.
ACTION: To correct this, install a new design transmission shifter housing and lever assembly (E7ZZ-7210-C) which has higher spring tension. Refer to the 1987 Car Shop Manual, Volume D, Section 17.
NOTE: Transmission shifter housing and lever assemblies requiring replacement may be identified by a yellow paint mark on the casting. The new design transmission shifter housing and lever assemblies have purple paint marks on the castings.
NOTE: The new transmission shifter housing and lever assembly must be adjusted in the overdrive position with a (3) three to (5) five pound rearward force (slight hand pressure) applied to the shift lever during torquing of the shift rod adjusting nut. Torque to 9.5-18.5 ft.lbs. (13-25 N-m).
