Dealer Installed A/C - Causes Engine Overheating

Article No. AIR CONDITIONING - DEALER INSTALLED -
87-6-5 1.9L - ENGINE OVERHEATS

FORD 1987 ESCORT, EXP

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1987 LYNX

ISSUE: Engine overheating during extended idling or while driving up steep grades during high ambient temperatures with a Ford dealer-installed air conditioning system, may be caused by poor cooling.

ACTION: To correct this, refer to one of the following service procedures. Procedure A is for air conditioning kits already installed on the vehicle and Procedure B is for air conditioning kits still in dealer stock.

PROCEDURE A

Kits Already Installed

Air conditioning kits received before January 1, 1987 and already installed on 1987 vehicles must be updated by contacting owners and offering to install an auxiliary fan kit (E7FZ-8W620-A) at no charge. The kit contains pusher fan, lower air deflector, relay, wiring harness, attaching hardware, and the installation instructions.

Parts Requirements

The E7FZ-8W620-A auxiliary fan kit can be ordered directly from Ford A/C Headquarters, Harrodsburg, Kentucky, phone number (606) 734-7711. Installation of this auxiliary fan kit on a previously installed 1987 system is reimbursable under the 12-month/unlimited mileage warranty on the Ford dealer-installed A/C system.

NOTE: Vehicles with A/C kits already installed will have the higher capacity engine cooling fan. Addition of the pusher fan may, in very limited situations, result in electrical current draw beyond the capacity of the vehicle charging system, resulting in battery discharge. For the potential to exist, all electrical accessories (e.g., lights, radios, wipers, A/C) would have to be operating simultaneously and at their maximums. If this should occur, it may be necessary to replace the higher capacity engine fan motor with the original equipment level motor, (E6FZ- 8K621-A).

PROCEDURE B

Kits In Dealer Stock

Air conditioning kits received before January 1, 1987 and still in dealer inventory should be used as follows:

^ Install existing E6FZ-19B968-C basic evaporator/condenser kit.

^ Install existing E7FZ-19B969-A or D engine component kit.

^ Install existing E6FZ-19703-A compressor/clutch kit.

^ Install new E7FZ-8W620-A auxiliary fan kit.

NOTE: Existing E6FZ-19B968-C basic evaporator/condenser kits can be used with NEW E7FZ-19B969-E and F engine component kits (with pusher fan) as long as lower air deflector E63Z-8349-A is also installed on vehicle. Order lower air deflector requirements from your parts distribution center.

Installation of auxiliary fan kit, when used with Ford air conditioning systems from dealer inventory received before January 1, 1987, is reimbursable within the 12-month/unlimited mileage A/C warranty period. The warranty program code is 3.
