Water Pump: Service and Repair

Fig. 9 Water pump removal & installation:

1. Drain cooling system into suitable container.
2. Loosen accessory drive belt idler, then remove drive belts.
3. Remove accessory drive belt idler bracket from engine.
4. Disconnect heater hose from water pump.
5. Remove water pump pulley-to-pump hub attaching bolts. The pump pulley cannot be removed at this time due to insufficient clearance between body and pump.
6. Remove eleven water pump attaching bolts,Fig. 9, then lift the water pump and pulley assembly up and out of vehicle and remove pulley.
7. Lightly lubricate all bolts and stud threads with oil.
8. Position pulley on replacement pump, then install pump/pulley assembly. Torque attaching bolts as shown in Fig. 9.
9. Install water pump pulley-to-pump hub attaching bolts and torque to 15---22 ft. lbs.
10. Reverse steps 1 through 4 to complete installation.
