SUBJECT: Safety Recall 87S36 - Certain 1986-1988 Passenger Cars and Certain 1985-1987 Light Trucks for Installation of Fuel Line Retainer Clips

REASON FOR Ford Motor Company has determined that a defect related to
THIS RECALL motor vehicle safety exists in certain 1986-1988 passenger cars and
certain 1985-1987 light trucks. On some of these vehicles, the fuel line spring lock couplings (quick connect fittings) may not have been properly latched at the time of initial assembly, or properly re-latched after the engine had been serviced. Either situation may allow the coupling to disconnect, creating a risk of fire. If a separation were to occur in the fuel supply system, vehicle movement would usually become inhibited, or in the case of vehicle start-up the smell of raw fuel may be evident. Continued attempts to start the vehicle would result in raw fuel being sprayed from the pressurized supply line, which potentially could be ignited by engine compartment electrical sparks. In the event a separation were to occur in the fuel return line system, driveability would not be inhibited, but ignition of leaking fuel may still occur.

To correct this condition, fuel line retainer clips must be installed on all affected units.
