A/T - AXOD/E Accumulator Springs Identification

TECHNICAL BULLETIN # 278

TRANSMISSION: AXOD/AXOD-E

SUBJECT: Accumulator Springs

APPLICATION: Ford

DATE: 1995

The accumulator springs on the AXOD and AXOD-E have changed from year to year.
They also vary with engine size. The following charts show the proper springs based on color.

If the paint has been washed off, the springs can be identified with the chart or by using the alternate method below.

ALTERNATE METHOD

STEP 1

Most units will have seven springs (1986-90 with 3.0L use six). The two largest springs are used in the 1-2 and N-D locations. There must be room for both springs to "wiggle" in their pockets. If not reverse their positions.

STEP 2

From the five (or four) remaining springs, locate two that are the largest in diameter. Note 1: A spring that fits inside another spring, must coil in the opposite direction. Start with the N-D accumulator then the 1-2. Note 2: The 1-2 accumulator will have two springs that will fit. Use the shorter of the two.

STEP 3

If there are three springs remaining, use the largest one that will fit inside the 1-2 accumulator. If there were only two springs remaining after step two, go directly to step four.

STEP 4

The two remaining springs are for the 3-4 accumulator.

SUMMARY

The alternate method is a very simple and effective way to sort the accumulator springs. Most technicians will find that this method is easier than using a chart, once they become familiar with it.
