ISSUE: Electronic instrument clusters use 2 candle power (cp) halogen bulbs for illumination. Field reports show that the 8 cp bulbs are sometimes used which cause premature burnout of the halogen bulbs and melt the bulb sockets.

ACTION: If service is required, use the 2 cp halogen bulb and socket assemblies, as listed in the Dealer Master Parts Catalog. Before replacing the 2 cp halogen bulb, complete the following diagnostic procedure.

1. Be sure there are no shorts or open grounds.

2. Clean and secure both underdash and chassis grounds.

3. Check charging system output voltage as outlined in Section 31 of the appropriate Shop Manual.
