Moon Roof - Revised Removal/Installation

MOON ROOF - POWER - REVISED REMOVAL AND Article No.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURES - VEHICLES BUILT 87-6-1
AFTER 02/18/87

FORD 1987 TAURUS, THUNDERBIRD

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1987 SABLE, COUGAR

ISSUE: The manual moon roof crank handle that was provided with vehicles in the past will no longer be supplied. A much more reliable power moon roof motor is now being used and the need to be able to manually crank the sliding roof panel should be very infrequent. The auxiliary drive in the power moon roof's motor assembly and the auxiliary drive access plug button in the roof console have been deleted on vehicles built after February, 1987.

ACTION: When servicing the moon roof, use the following removal and installation procedure.

CAUTION: Disconnect battery ground cable.

1. Remove roof console assembly located at front of roof trim panel. Refer to appropriate Car Shop Manual, Section 45-35.

2. Remove moon roof motor and bracket assembly, as covered in Car Shop Manual, Section 46-07, to expose the splined drive shaft of the drive gear box attached to roof housing panel assembly.

NOTE: A typical Ford door window regulator crank handle (such as those found on Escort/ Lynx) properly set on the splined drive shaft of the moon roof drive gear box can be used to crank the sliding roof panel closed/open.

3. Perform repairs as required.

4. After servicing the moon roof, close sliding roof panel and remove crank handle.

NOTE: Since the motor's auxiliary drive has been deleted, the following motor synchronization stops must be performed, before the moon roof motor and bracket assembly can be installed. The sliding roof panel must be in CLOSED position for motor synchronization.

a. Connect battery ground cable.

b. Connect the motor's wiring connector to the moon roof's wiring connector.

c. Operate control switch to advance the motor's drive gear until centerline of gear, centerline of cam, and the hole in the cam are aligned, as shown in appropriate Car Shop Manual, Section 46-07.

d. Disconnect the moon roof motor.

e. Make sure lifter arms and guidance ramps are aligned as shown in Section 46-07 of the Car Shop Manual. Reconnect the moon roof motor.

5. Install the synchronized motor and bracket assembly to roof housing panel assembly.

6. Install roof console assembly.

7. Check to make sure sliding roof panel operates properly.
