SAFETY RECALL 86S18 - CERTAIN 1987 TAURUS AND SABLE VEHICLES FOR INSPECTION AND, IF NECESSARY, REPLACEMENT OF THE INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT ASSEMBLYDear Owner:
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the U.S. National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Ford Motor Company has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 1987 model Taurus and Sable vehicles.
REASONS FOR THIS RECALL:
A connection in the steering shaft assemblies of some of these vehicles may separate without prior warning, leaving a driver with no ability to steer the car. Should the steering separate, a total loss of steering control could occur. A vehicle crash may also result.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO:
Return your car to your dealer without delay. If your dealer is not easily accessible, use the services of dealer nearest to you. When you take your car in, give the enclosed form to the dealer. If you misplace the form, the dealer will still do the work, free of charge.
SERVICE TO BE PERFORMED:
At no cost to you, your dealer will inspect and, if necessary, replace the steering shaft assembly. The time needed to perform this service is less than one hour.
IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE GETTING THE SERVICE DONE:
If the dealer does not make the repair promptly and without charge, mail Section 3 of the prepaid postcard to us. You may also send a complaint to the Administrator, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 400 Seventh Street, SW, Washington, DC 20590 or call the toll free Auto Safety Hotline 800-424-9393.
We regret the inconvenience this service may cause you; but, we want you to have the work completed for your safety and satisfaction with your Ford-built car.
