VALVE INSIDE PRESSURE PORT - VEHICLES BUILT AFTER 01/30/87 87-8-4
FORD: 1987 TAURUS
LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1987 SABLE
Figure 5:
ISSUE: Vehicles built after January 3O, 1987 have had the steering gear check valve relocated to the inside of the pressure port where the power steering pressure line attaches. These steering gears can be identified by the relocated right turn transfer tube and/or the use of the new design hose fittings which do not have serviceable O-rings, Figure 5.
ACTION: To prevent loss of the check valve, prior to removing the steering gear, cover the pressure port with tape or a clean plug.
NOTE: During removal or installation of the steering gear assembly, it is possible for the check valve to fall out. The check valve must be reinstalled in the pressure port with the open end down, and the spring-loaded poppet up, Figure 5. Incorrect installation in the pressure port (upside down), or in the return port will result in a low assist/no assist condition.
