Door Lock Knob - Twisted/Misaligned

LOCK - FRONT AND REAR DOORS -

LOCK KNOB TWISTS IN TRIM PANEL BEZEL

Article No. 88-11-2

FORD: 1986-87 TAURUS

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1986-87 SABLE

ISSUE: A misaligned door lock knob may be caused by the lock knob twisting inside of the large opening in the door trim panel lock knob bezel. The rubber filler that is used around the lower portion of the lock knob may not hold it in the correct position which can result in the twisting condition.

ACTION: To correct this, install new design door lock knobs and lock knob bezels. Refer to the following service procedure.

FIGURE 1:





1. Remove the front and rear door trim panel and cover assemblies.

2. Remove door watershield assemblies.

3. Remove and throw away the front door latch push button rod assemblies.

4. Remove the rear door latch control bellcrank and link assemblies by drilling out rivets, Figure 1.

5. Disconnect and throw away rear door latch push button rod assemblies.
NOTE: DO NOT THROW AWAY THE REAR DOOR LATCH CONTROL ROD LINK

ASSEMBLIES OR BELLCRANK ASSEMBLIES.

6. Enlarge the lock knob opening in the rear door inner panels an additional 1-9/32" (32 mm) as shown in Figure 2.

7. Connect the new rear door latch push button rod assemblies to the bellcrank and link assemblies removed in Step 4. Refer to the parts application chart on page 13 of this TSB.

8. Reinstall the rear door bellcrank and link assemblies to the door inner panel with a new rivet, N802034-S6, Figure 1.

9. Install new front door latch push button rod assemblies. Refer to the parts application chart on page 13 of this TSB.

10. Reinstall the door watershield assemblies.

11. Replace the bezels on the front door trim panels on Taurus/Sable and the rear door trim panels on Taurus only.

NOTE: THE REAR DOOR TRIM PANEL ASSEMBLIES FOR THE SABLE WILL REQUIRE REPLACEMENT.

12. Remove and throw away the existing lock knob bezels.

13. If the lock knob bezels are the snap-in type, drill out two (2) rivets holding lock knob bezel retaining clip and plate to the door trim panels, Figure 3.

14. Obtain a new lock knob bezel with the added spring, new rivet 382568-S2 and flat washer 372901-S2 for each door trim panel, Figure 4. Refer to the parts application chart on page 13 of this TSB.

15. Using the new bezel as a guide, align it to the door trim panel and drill a 1/8" (3 mm) hole in the door trim panel, Figure 4.

16. Repeat Step 15 for the three (3) remaining door trim panels.

17. Position the bezel in the trim panel with the flat washer on the backside of the trim panel and install the rivet, Figure 4.









18. Repeat Step 17 for the three (3) remaining door trim panels.

19. Obtain new rear door trim panel assemblies for the Sable. Refer to the application chart on page 13 of this TSB.

20. Install the front and rear door trim panel and cover assemblies.
